Frequently Asked Questions

What age can join Boy Scouts?

The age group is from 11 (or 10 years old and have completed 5th grade) to 18 years old or 6th to 12th grade.

When is it too late to join?

Typically, anytime in middle school is the best time to get started in Boy Scouts. Boys can participate in the Boy Scout troop until they turn eighteen; they can join at any point up until that point, but if they don't join until high school, they will not have time to reach the highest ranks (such as Eagle).

How much does Cub Scouts cost?

Troop 268 charges dues annually - about $100; you will need to acquire some uniform and equipment. Monthly campouts usually cost $15 to $30, depending on the activity. If they go to summer camp the cost is around $325 for a week, although the Scouts have an opportunity to do fundraising to defray some of the cost.

Do I have to join a particular Boy Scout Troop based on our school?

No! There are several other Boy Scout troops nearby in Dunwoody and Brookhaven, and they can join whichever one is most convenient to their schedule and best matches their desired program. You can locate other Scout troops at http://beascout.org.

I've read that Boy Scouts are now accepting girls - how does that affect Troop 268?

Beginning in February 2019, Boy Scout troops are allowed to begin accepting girls (and will be referred to nationally as 'Scouts BSA'; however, due to the strength of the Girl Scouts program in the Chamblee/Brookhaven area, Troop 268 is seeing limited demand at this time. There is a troop nearby (in Dunwoody) that will be accepting girls; if your daughter is interested in the Boy Scouts program, please e-mail us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. so we can connect you to the right contacts.

Alternatively, please consider getting involved in a local Girl Scouts troop - see our Girl Scouts webpage for more information.

Are there fundraising requirements?

Troop 268 chooses to not do extensive fundraising, but instead requires fees based on participation in individual activities. However, we do participate in the annual camp card sales which allows Scouts to raise money for a significant part of their summer camp cost.

How often does Troop 268 go camping?

Woodruff Scout CampIn July, Troop 268 spends a week at Woodruff Scout Reservation for summer camp; otherwise, we generally have a campout or outing once a month for most campouts, we leave from the Chamblee Methodist parking lot on Saturday morning and return on Sunday at noon.

Do parents need to participate?

In Boy Scouts, the Scouts are supposed to plan their own activities, but we always need adult leadership from parents - parents can drive to and join on campouts; serve on the troop committee; help the boys organize activities and help with merit badges that match their interests or experience. The Scout troop can be a great opportunity to spend time with your son as he matures into an adult.

What is the relationship between Troop 268 and Chamblee Methodist - does my child have to be a church member to Join?

Boy Scouts is open to all families, regardless of Church membership or faith. Chamblee Methodist is the chartered organization supporting Pack 268, and we do request (but not require) Scouts to attend the annual Scout Sunday service to be recognized by the church.

Patrols

A Scout patrol is a small group of six to eight Scouts where they will learn skills together, share responsibilities and take on leadership roles. Each patrol has a Patrol Leader who will usually have an Assistant Patrol Leader to help them manage the patrol. Scouts BSA are led by the scouts themselves and the adult leaders are there for guidance. Patrol Leaders will work with the Senior Patrol leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader who manages the overall troop. The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters are there to help train them and guide them through the process of managing the troop.

The troop will adjust Patrols over time and may vary in which patrols are Mixed Aged or Same Age Patrols. The goal is to make sure the Scouts are in a Patrol that they can grow and have positive learning experiences, making it not too large or too small.

Summer Camp

2022 Woodruff Badge for 40 years attendance Troop 268Each year Troop 268 goes to summer camp. In 2022, Troop 268 has gone to Camp Woodruff every year for the last 40 years. Woodruff is located in the north Georgia Mountains and provides for unlimited opportunities for adventure. They offer a great first-year-camper program, to help boost scouts in rank, while still providing challenging courses for those older scouts. They have a great waterfront that is large enough for the water-skiing merit badge along with the other swimming and boating merit badges. A new feature of the camp is the STEM center, which is filled with merit badges that built robots to explore space.

It takes a lot to be a Scoutmaster. Here is Troop 268's list of those who steped up and showed the scouts how to be a scout.
